What is Magisterial District Court?

Magisterial District Court covers a wide variety of matters, including:

  • Minor Criminal Cases

  • Setting Bail 

  • Preliminary Criminal Hearings - Misdemeanors & Felonies​

  • Small Claims and Landlord-Tenant Matters up to $12,000​​

  • Emergency and Temporary Protection From Abuse Orders

  • Performing Marriages

Magisterial District Court is the first level of court in Pennsylvania. Most people will experience the court system in district court. District judges are elected to a term of 6 years. Although district judges are elected, the role of district judge is non-political. As with any judge, district judges are required and expected to make decisions based on the law and facts, devoid of all bias or political influence.

District judges oversee a wide variety of matters and interact with a diverse cross-section of the community. District judges must have the right temperament to adequately and properly serve the law and community. Electing a district judge with a well-rounded background and real-world experience is critical to fulfilling the needs and expectations of the community.
